Re: Arcam 8 cdp

To be honest, I'd be surprised if the newer models sound much better. One of the reasons they produce a "newer" model is because their past model will only be reviewed once by each magazine. So you see, there is a need for all the hype in producing a newer "better" product.

I have an Alpha 7r amplifier and have just bought a brand new and quite pricey tube amp, and I have to say that the Arcam stands up against it incredibly well!! (it's 6 yrs old)

You might want to look into all the aftermarket "hot rodding" options out there, a "superclock" (bit pricey) would propel your cdp way way above any of the newer Arcam's for a lot less cost.
Replacing some of the capacitors with hi-end aftermarket ones will make an enormous difference, for next to peanuts.

I've just done a little google search and see that arcam offer an internal upgrade option from the 8 to the 9, remember the 9 was $1600 new, and I'll bet its a pretty inexpensive upgrade thesedays.

In my opinion unless a technological leap has been made, much of the so called imrovements between models is down to marketing. (magazines help sell products, new products help sell magazines)

Good luck
