BSC circuts simply shelve down all frequencies above the step frequency. Only by comparison to the frequencies above the step does the bass range seem boosted (when in reality only the bass in un-affected). Since tweeters usually require some attenuation anyway to level-match woofers, incorporating the BSC into the speaker crossover is relatively easy. A tone stack is also a passive device, but again only realizes boost in comparison to a shelved down over-all frequency band; therefore such circuts have an insertion loss & is why tone stacks usually include an attendant gain stage to make up for that loss. Likewise a passive BSC before the power amp will also decrease gain if no additional gain stage is included. Standard reactance formulas are: 159,000/frequency*impedance = answer in uF & 159*impedance/frequency = answer in mH.
