All of the constrained layer approaches I've seen or tried have had a 'soft' centre with layers then increasing in hardness/rigidity to the outer layers. I've never seen one with a hard inner layer.I have no idea whether or not it will work but if you do try it, I'd suggest keeping the layers matched. In other words, make sure your 2 foam layers are identical and the 2 aluminium outer layers are identical. I have found when stacking soft layers that differing layers can work against each other. My one experiment with stacking identical soft things was with Vibrapods, using 2 identical Vibrapods stacked vertically, flat side to flat side with a thin, stiff piece of board between them. I thought that worked marginally better than a single Vibrapod of the same rating (if you try this, remember that both Vibrapods are each effectively supporting the same share of the overall mass - choose the Vibrapod grade as if you were using single Vibrapods rather than stacked pairs) but I didn't play with the idea too much.
