Why would you want to connect a cap, etc. gd. to the chassis or a mounting screw ? Attach one lead of your DVM to a mounting screw or chassis and touch the other lead to a different mounting screw to verify that you have continuity. Leave one lead connected to the mounting screw and begin probing the bottom of the of the pcb for a ground that will give you the shortest lead length. Best to use a pointed probe for this to get thru the conformal coating most pcbs are covered with. Scratch a patch of conformal off and make your connection. Most CD players pcb has some form of ground plain on the top of the pcb. Again, you have to pierce the conformal coating to find the GP/GP lines. You can improve the sonics noticeably by soldering each gd. pin of all the IC's directly to the gd. plain by running an 'L' shaped 22 ga. jumper from each ground pin to the gd. plain. Quiet gds. (short length) increase the resolution of fine detail. Most gd.lines on the pcb bottom wander all over the place before arriving at the Central Gd., if there is one. Do this by first carefully tinning the IC's gd. pins and the GP area the jumper will be soldered to. Using a small hemostat (very versatile tool) also tin the jumper and then solder it in place. Carefully inspect the IC to be sure you haven't bridged one or more pins. If so, use solder wick to remove the bridge. You should do the same with the Xtl, and then wrap about 3 turns of lead tape around it to damp vibrations. Lead tape is available at golf shops/sporting goods stores. Each female RCA has a ground flag attached to it inside the enclosure. Also, make sure that the RCA 's are electrically isolated from the chassis.
