Outlet replacement question.

I was replacing the original outlet in my listening room this am with a Pass and Seymour 5262 and when I removed the original outlet there was a short piece of wire running from the white terminal to the ground, along with a bare ground wire. (We live in an old house with a variety of elect. mysteries) This outlet is in series with the other oulets in the room, so there was a white wire on the top and bottom of the outlet. What is the short wire for? When I put in the Pass and Seymour I left it off.

BTW the system sounds pretty bad now, there is more detail, but it is relentless and bright. Strange.
