Good woodworking is a skill that takes a lot of work to learn. You'd do best to go to the library and get a book with pictures rather than rely upon here... if you google, there are no doubt some picture walkthroughs available on basic woodworking. Once you have some better info, go SLOWLY. Being your first time, measure 8 times, cut once.
