The Copland spec is with the volume control at full volume, for full power output. Unless you are listening at a very loud level, it's unlikely that the CD player is overloading the input of the amp. The volume control would act just like an attentuator(which it is), so putting another attenuator in series will only cause you to turn up the volume control more, with the same result. What you may be experiencing is plain old clipping at the level you like to listen. What you may need is more power, or more effiecient speakers.
