3 ways, one easy, one takes the right tool

1) Easy way is NOT the classic way because it blocks the bottom hole: You use PVC cement to glue it into a flat bottomed PVC pipe plug of the same size as the pipe, then glue that plug to the wooden base (or glue to base first, then pipe into it). This still leaves the top open.
2) Classic way requiring special tool, a 2.5" or 2 3/8" hole saw, which is actually a drill bit. You make sure you know the external diameter of your pipe and buy the appropriate drill bit/hole saw and just drill/cut the hole into the wooden base. Then screw, or glue or pressure fit the pipes into the hold in the base. This allows you to stuff the pipe properly from both ends and for the resonance effect to work from both sides (refer to post by Thorsten Loesch on pipe stuffing).
3) Hybrid approach is to do #1 with a plug that is not solid, but has a large hole in the middle. Then drill that size or larger hole into wooden base below it, which permits some air/resonance through the bottom. Might work as well for all intents and purposes as the real thing anyway (have forgotten my Heimholz theory), but you'll have to stuff the pipe before gluing it into that plug, which should be glued onto the wooden base over the hole you drilled.

Sounds like a lotta words to describe something really simple!!!

These work well for me, BTW, but you will have to play with placement in your room to know.
