All you've done is check for continuity between those two points. You have not yet ruled out a short between center and outer on the input jack nor measured the resistor. If you need a replacement resistor, simply get a 5-pack at your local Radio Shack this week-end; you can always replace with *super-duper quality* ones later if you want but that 47K-to-common does establish the phono stage's input impedance and therefore the correct loading for your cartridge. Your problem will reside where you worked on it, not elsewhere.
