boy, I sure wish it was as straightforward as that

I was floored, knocked flat on my can when I coated the inside of a a Bel Canto Evo4 with a 15 micron diamond + C37 lacquer "mud". Didn't go on too thick either. The diamond settles so quickly in c37 that there was a lacquer thick coat around the edges than as I got to the bottom of the mixing bottle with the brush it turned to a thick paste which I used to progressively work to the center of the top. There you had it, no other dampers or tuners or dots or Dynamat. The change for the better was shocking. Like a thick layer of fur had come off the sound, and we're talking about a digital amp that has a reputation for high intelligibility. Wish I had one of the Rowlands for a side by side. Lesson was that steel boxes fundamenatally sound wretched, and this wasn't counting the magnetic problems of steel. Aluminum sounds alright but not fabulous. Soft damping can help but also has a tendency to go dead if you use too much. Heck, steel is cheap though.
