Think of compliance as the "springiness" of the speaker driver. When you put it in a box, the air in the box acts as an additional spring, working with the driver compliance. You need to take both into account when calculating how the system behaves.The larger the box, the more compressible it is, so it's like a softer spring. Vas is the box volume that would have the same springiness as the driver.
