Acrylic looks like that when the edges are flame polished. I also think acrylic makes reasonable shelves - Grand Prix Audio use it as their basic shelf with their top range racks (1/2 inch standard thickness or 3/4 inch heavy duty). I've used 20 mm thick (a bit over 3/4 inch) as the outer layers of some constrained layer damping platforms and am very impressed with the results.

Acrylic isn't cheap, especially as thickness goes up, and flame polishing adds to the cost.
