the 10k pot is what came in the amp from the manufacturer. i've no idea what the output impedance of the source components are, as they're all custom jobs. but thus far, i'm not hearing any egregious frequency anomalies; i'm just looking for better transparency, imaging, and extension, and i'm thinking going from a $2 pot to a high $ volume attenuator would be a big step in that direction.looks like your math is spot on: in measuring the input impedance of the amp at the RCAs (prior to the pots), the impedance varied right in that 9.1k - 10k range you specified (well, it was slightly outside, but lets not split hairs).
i'm all for getting a better volume control from percy; i was thinking of going for a TKD stepped job w/ vishay S102s as the shunts...pricey, but very good stuff.
i'm not clear by your statement: "...providing what amounts to a short-circuit load to it will not degrade the sound." - could you clarify?
