The core material can be a factor, and this is why I call out either a powdered iron core, or a specific brand/model of ferrite core.Other cores may not continue to filter at the higher frequencies, and may either saturate more easily, or lose some of their magnetic properties at the higher frequencies. This will make the overall filter less effective in filtering the higher frequencies, as well as less capable in terms of carying a certain level of current withut any other side effects.
The whole core issue is less of a concern if you are not going to be adding the surge suppression MOV's to the filter.
