Could be something else but I'll rule out my cdp or phono since the problem remains for either source. My amp is an unmodified ASL Tulip which I don't associate with this hardness. Probably the modded pre. The upgraded caps are Black Gates and Auricaps which have a pretty good rep. I suppose the increased resolution may have highlighted weaknesses in the chain. The only questionable replacement was a pair of 16 pF silver mica caps (C11 and C24 if you care to look at the pre schematics, right after the wiper). Maybe I could replace the original plastic stereo pot and see if I notice any trace of this steeliness.http://www.ys-audio.com/ys-audio_eng.htm
