Re: Is there any "best" ball bearing material for isolation . .

The bearing material may not be the only story.

The difference between Symposium grade 25 tungsten bearings at $75/set retail and the Symposium grade 3 at $345/set retail, is not the material. They are the same bearing.

What is different between these 2 grades of bearing is the percisioness of the grind. It takes much longer, and cost much more to grind a grade 3 than a grade 25. The tungsten bearing used in both grades is identical, it's just ground differently.

The Steel Chromium bearings that come with the Series II Roller Blocks are a different material and lighter (in weight) than the Tungsten alloy bearings being offered as a upgrade. The grade 25 and grade 3 are the exact same weight.

Don't mix up your balls... the only way to tell the difference between the grade 25's, and the grade 3's is to look at them under an electron microscope. The surface of the grade 25's will look similar to the parallel lines of sand in a desert. The grade 3's will look smooth like a mirror's surface, due to their higher degree of concentricity.

The sound difference between the Steel Chromium and the grade 25's might be their natural resonte frequencys. The difference between the grade 25's and the grade 3's is their concentricity. The grade 3's can move through their arc more easily when they detect vibrations.

Some of the varing degree of results discussed here on AA may also be attributed to bearing chatter. Thats a another conversation all together.

Besides different materials, with different natural resonte frequencies, placement of your bearing set up is also very critical, and will change the presentation.

My source of info is Peter from Symposium. I had a long conversation with him at the last show in NYC.

Disclaimer: I am not related to or work for Symposium Pdts, I am just a very satisfied customer. 16 sets of Series II blocks (used in double stacked configuration), 7 sets of grade 3's bearings, and numerious sets of unemployed grade 25's. I also use a Vibraplan (Under CD/DVD) and employ Audio Resolution platforms and Bright Star Little Rock 2's and 3's for mass loading.
