I made alot of endgrain maple tops back in the 70's. Way cool Scandi office stuff. The only way to keep them from cracking violently is to cut it thin and veneer no thicker than 1/2" to ply. Maple moves more per year from seasonal humidity than any wood except beech(beach). An 1/8" per year every 6" in width is common across the flatgrain. Add that x4 for a typical top and when gued edgely, cannot contain it's own movement and pop it will. A 45 degree lam is ok, 50% less shrinkage for width. Always acct for movement with solids. Butcher block works best when the rift (edge) grain is vertical on top and the movement is through it's thickness, not the width. I live to laminate.TC
