At the London HiFi show I saw a material which sounded good. It was two inches thick but quite light, and made from numerous laminations of thin ply and in between each layer some sort of flimsy corrugated white plastic tiles stuck together with white PVC adhesive. The whole lot was pressed together. That's what I'd like to try for my next project. Forget the name of the stuff, but should be fairly easy to copy.
