Half-superballs will often sound better than no treatment since they will filter out some frequencies of vibrations. Due to their ability to store and release energy (this is how they bounce so high - they are engineered to absorb and then release energy), however, they are far from an ideal solution. If you're using four halves per component, you can likely get even better sound by using only three. There are also other low and no-cost things you may already have around the house that may yield even better sound. Using three superball size daps of rope caulk (brand name Mortite) under each component may be an improvement over the superballs. Also, raquetball or tennis ball halves may sound better as well. If using one of the latter, I'd stuff them with rope caulk, too, as this will help to damp the resonant properties of the rubber.
Do note that all of the DIY tweaks mentioned above will make your gear sound different, although not necessarily better, or more transparent.
If you want to move in the direction of more transparancy, however, do the isolation search - the main goal is to attenuate as many frequencies of vibrations as much as possible without amplifying any others.
