Getting good sound requires getting a reasonable balance between the direct sound reaching you from the speakers and the reflected sound bouncing off room surfaces.Echoes are a form of reflected sound, but an echo is a reflection that is strong enough to be heard as a separate sound in its own right, and will always appear to be coming from a different spot. You don't want to hear echoes of the music you're playing at the listening position. The level of the reflections you hear should be considerably lower than that, and at the appropriate levels they help create an illusion of spaciousness and help provide a good soundstage and imaging.
Stand in the right spot in almost any room and clap your hands and you can hear an echo. That isn't necessarily a problem unless you put a speaker there and you can still hear the echo at the listening position. In some cases, because of room geometry and materials, you may find a spot where echoes can be heard from many sounds in the room, so you probably wouldn't want to sit there because it would be difficult to avoid getting echoes.
