G'Day,I see the dilemma. Paradoxically, by absorbing bass frequency energy through judiciuous placement of bass (or broad spectrum) 'traps' you can make the room behave more uniformly in the lower frequencies. Selective absorption at one physical point can reduce cancellation at another.
Diffusers could well achieve the same goal, although the physical mechanisms are slightly different. When it comes to waves of equal energy cancelling out (anti-phase or 'suck out') then we can "confuse the wave" by breaking it up, or absorb part of the wave energy in one direction.
That's the idea, anyway.
