Sand will damp the vibrations, adding any old mass will not necessarily do as much good. It is the reduction of the piezoelectric generation of spurious signals from the crystal that the sand vibration control will help, reducing master oscillator induced jitter. If all you did was to add say, a hunk of glass, then you would be adding mass, but the mass would not be resonance damping like the sand. You would lower the frequency of the crystal can mechanical resonance, but it would probably still be quite high in amplitude.Jon Risch
