16 x 16 x 8' room & bass suckout - Suggestions???

156.153.255.130

Greetings Tweakers,
My room sounds terrible! I am soliciting suggestions as to where to start to tame and improve it.
Problems: At the listening position (about 3/4 back from the front wall and centered), the bass hurts my ears even though it seems to be at a much lower level than the rest of the music. If I move closer to the subs, I hear it better and deeper. At the listening position, it seems to get sucked out.
The midrange is harsh, seem too forward and sometimes makes me squint.
The highs are ok, mostly coherent, but not great.
Room: 16'x 16'x 8'ceiling. One opening into the kitchen 7' wide on the back wall and one door way into a 11 x 11 office on the front wall. Both side walls are straight and plain. Floor is carpeted. No curtains except a fabric drape thingy that my wife made to make the window look "pretty", 1 futon, one love seat and one glider rocker with a seat and back pad. Oh, also, the house is on a raised foundation (not slab)with a wooden floor.
Speaker Placement: Subs and Sattelites both approx 2' from side wall and approx 1 1/2' from back wall. After moving speakers around, I've found this to sound the least offensive.
Calculations: I calculated the room modes to be approx 70, 140, 210, 270 etc for all dimensions.

Suggestions as to where to start?
Roomlens?
Bass Traps?
Wall Absorbers?

Any feed back is greatly appreciated. I hope to document, with pictures, on a web site the improvements and their affects on the sound.

Thanks much,
bigken
