Re: xover mods - cap replacement

Bob,

My first tweak project was exactly what you want to do. I began on my old DCM Time Windows, adding by-pass caps to the XO. It's not difficult, all you need is a few hand tools and a soldering iron. Here's what I did (many yrs ago) in order of difficulty.

1. Added .05 uF bypass caps to XO
2. Rewired speaker and added better binding posts
3. removed and disassembled XO from speaker, seperated the high pass and low pass sections, added second set of binding posts (bi-wire)
4. Completely replaced all orig. XO parts w/ top quality parts (polyprop caps, air core inductors, non-inductive resistors. Rewired the speaker second time w/ more $$$ wire.
5. Removed XO boards from inside speaker cabinet and put them inside external, damped enclosure.

In each case the Time Windows sounded better. I started very cautiously, since I knew practically nothing at the time. I took over a year to fully complete the 5 stage rebuild. I retained the original XO configuration and matched the orig. part's values rather than try moving into unknown territory and messing up the speaker's sound. Later, I did do some tinkering w/ caps and such but that's another tale.

Good luck and have fun.
