in this price range, your best bet is a cheap dvd player to use as a transport and a used dac (or one of the low priced 24/96 dacs, but I have not heard them so can't comment). In the used DAC depaqrtment, the EAD DSP 7000 III is an absolute steal. This piece is discontinued by EAD and they no longer offer upgrades, etc., but the converter section is (I believe) the same as in the Ultradisc 2000, which costs in the $2500 range and has been highly recommended by the Absolute Sound. Personally, I think the EAD 7000 is one of the best sounding DACs, period. I have one that's several years old and I love it -- every time I've been tempted to spend more money on a newer DAC, I can't justify the switch. On the used market, they sell for around $700-$750, sometimes they show up cheaper.
