I just built some great stands. The base and top are pine, but any material will really work. The key to it is making sure you use a good MDF for the box (at least 3/4") that goes in between them. Build a 4 sided box with MDF (the top and bottom will finish off the other 2 sides) and seal the joints with wood glue, and screws to hold them tight. Now attach the BOTTOM of the box. I made mine a bit bigger than the column itself, just to give it a more sturdy base. Once the bottom is on, glued and screwed like the sides, you need to get some Silicone caulk to run along all of the inside seams. Across the bottom, and up the sides. This will prevent the sand from leaking. Now, fill the column up about 3/4 of the way with DRY play sand. It is easier if the stands are where they will be permanently before you fill them, as they become VERY heavy. Now screw on the top piece of wood. I chose not to glue it, because I thought I might remove the sand later if I am moving. Just a though. THe MDF can be sanded very smooth, and if you paint it, it can turn out really well. I thought of veneering it, but was not brave enough. Some extras, you can inlay tile in the top shelf to put spikes on to help separate the speaker, but make sure they are strong enough not to crack. Play around with it, as this is a VERY simple plan. Enjoy, and keep us posted.
