I think the XA1ES uses the transport and chassis from the XA2ES, XA3ES,
but uses the less good DAC from the cheaper Sony range.
AFAIK the 'Current Pulse' DAC of the XA2ES, XA3ES, XA20ES and others
is far superior to that lesser DAC and therefore I'd have reservations
about the XA1ES.If you can find an XA3ES (equivalent to the UK XA2ES version) I'd have
no hesitation recommending that! I have the XA2ES and I'd say it's a
pretty good machine all round, with some excellent points. First, to
me it doesn't sound 'digital' ... but it's not rolled off to make it
sound artificially 'analogue', it's detailed but not harsh.
This makes it excellent for vocals (esp. female vocals) and (perhaps
controversially) I'd suggest that's an absolute thing, irrespective of
class or price ... :-)
OK, it doesn't have the rhythm, verve or musical energy of say a Naim,
but there's not much that does! And I can say (having compared the two)
that I greatly preferred the Sony to Naim for female vocals.
