I use a green felt markeer from an art supply store, the shade is "Emerald Green". The reason this works (damps refracted light from the laser in the CD) is that GREEN is the complimentary color of RED (the laser operates in the low infraRED spectrum, about 880 nanoweber). Red & Green together produce BLACK. To increase the effect coat the edge of the CD with a black marker after the Green coat has dried.
