The disc looking thing could be a varistor, a sort of heavy-duty back to back zener diode, which clamps above a certain voltage threshold. The black thing the wires go through is most likely a ferrite bead or clamp, which is just a way of shorting out HF using the reactance of the ferrite material at RF frequencies.For more information on DIY AC line filters
