Just as there are different "grades" of plywood, there are also different grades of MDF (very good to very poor). MDF is a generic term which does not reflect the quality of the MDF product -- i.e, quality control is the most important factor in producing audio grade MDF and the higher the grade, the more expensive because of so much which must be discarded due to the precision required in the pressing/gluing process. If you are serious about your sound, you should do more research on this topic. I have personally heard, first hand, "high grade" plywood shelves outperform "high grade " MDF in an R&D test at a major US equipment shelf manufacturer's plant facilities. Do your homework, if you are looking for the highest quality of sound you can get by talking to woodworking experts.
