I have Kabers as well as homemade speakers...

and I think it might be hard to beat the Kabers for $899. My homemade speakers, which replaced the Kabers in my main system, cost about $1500 to build from scratch, and the drivers were purchased used! They were copies of some that were built by a friend who is very experienced. They are better than the Kabers, but it's not a really huge difference.
I have heard that, as cbob says, if you can multi-amp the Kabers and replace the passive crossover with an active one, you will get a great improvement. As cbob also says, Linn makes this easy but they charge you a lot for it. You could, however, do it using a non-Linn crossover and non-Linn amps. I strongly considered this myself. If you got a flexible crossover (e.g. Marchand) I don't think it would be hard to do.
