The original design indeed uses the air space, but as part of an RC acoustic circuit. A cylinder of lightly compressed fiberglass or polyfill is all R, and since it goes all the way to the center, it is almost as effective as the RC approach, about 70% for the fiberglass version.
The fiberglass will be much cheaper AND more effective than the polyfill, which is typically NOT compressed that much on the rolls.
If using polyfil, loose the center cardboard tube.[ The other possibility is using the wool panels to build the triangular trap -- this is possible without wood, right? ]
No, the rock wool panels need the trapped air space just like the full blown animal fence design, and therefore need the end caps.
