Despite what may be thought, this DAC responds well to tweaks. Yes, it is a little crazy, considering the work involved, but some have tweaked these to an incredible amout, I have personally done two.
You can go back to the TAA articles from 1994 and 1996, Jitter RIP if you want to go that route. The mods done were : tweak cs8412(new regulator, bypass caps) add AD811 as I/V converter, add external analog supply (Jung +/- Regulators) replace output filter buffer opamp (with AD844/811) add 1891 board with ASRC, reclock LE pin with flip flop before D/A converter. Replace analog parts with quality components in filter area.
The 1891 board is avaialble from old colony for 16. if you are interested. You need to lose the little case and mount it in a preamp size box with outboard power supplies. Sounds totally different.
It amazes me how many people have proven over and over again that it is possible to get pretty good sound from 16 or 18 bit D/A chips, done right. AN DAC 1 for instance, uses a very similar part (AD1865) to the DITB (AD1862) one is dual, the other is single.
Now, i probably wouldn't start this as a new project today, but you asked.....What would i do? IF I wanted to build a decent DAC, With a board available, probably buy sheldon Stokes board and build his DAC using PCM-63s. But I digress....
