I believe your general take on why the soundstaging is more pronounced with the tweak is correct. It is the tiny details and timing cues that give that sense of hearing the instruments in space and not just a flat presentation.

The same thing happens with vibration/resonance control. Vibrations in any part of the playback chain can obscure these small details and obliterate this sense of space around the instuments in a recording. Likewise, too much resonance in the upper treble/ top octave will flatten the soundstage.

To recreate the effect of the original recordings soundstage accurately in our listening rooms, we must eliminate spurious noise [EMI/RFI], eliminate internal/external vibration and make sure the resonances are distributed evenly throughout the frequency range to avoid over emphasis in any one region [especially the highs].

This is alot of work, but we're not afraid to get our hands a little dirty now are we? Afterall, we wouldn't spend all these hours on this hobby if were not committed ;)
