Quantum Symphony - positioning for maximum effect

155.69.4.55

A tip for Quantum Symphony users to try.

I originally thought that the Quantum Symphony line conditioners work by sending some kind of pulse through the powerlines into which they are plugged.

A recent Stereo Times review seemed to imply, instead, that these units actually emanate some kind of wave into the surrounding space that benefits electronic circuitry in its vicinity.

To experiment, I moved my two Symphony units, originally located about five feet away from my components, to a position where they were merely inches away from my CD player and amplifier.

The audible result was an "un-congealing" or unmuddling of the sound, where the special color of each instrument was more realistically portrayed, sounding more distinct from the others. Each entity was also rendered more separate in their own space in the soundstage. Each instruments thus sounded distinctly more colorful, present and alive.

An e-mail from Bill Stierhout of Quantum Life confirmed that the Symphonies should be placed as close to components as possible. Surprisingly, this aspect was not specified in the instruction leaflet.

For Quantum Symphony users whose units are placed at some distance from your components, you might be pleasantly surprised by the additional clarity you could possibly obtain by tucking the units somewhere much closer to the components. The improvements in my system seem nearly as perceptible as plugging in an additional Quantum Symphony. Of course, if your QS units are already quite close to your components, you may not hear much difference.

It would be interesting to see if how tip works in other setups.
