Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

Can I tell you all of my recent experience in sound.I have for many years been a self Hi Fi builder building amplifiers/ Speakers, etc. Using high quality special components I have for many years tweaked and improved my equipment and I consider it to be very good.
Now a friend of mine sent me a set of spikes (the screw in types) and suggested I try them on my speaker stands. I have Target Three legged stands that already have spikes.
I was not impressed by the suggestion. This meant me taking my carefully balanced speakers down dismantling my stands and setting it all up again, and for what? A spike, is a spike, is a spike. I carefully looked at them. Yes they were very well made, and quite heavy in the hand compared to the normal spikes. They were also made of stainless steel. When I screwed them in I noticed a precise smooth turn in the thread compared to my old ones. Yes they are well made.
I prepared myself for an impossible task of hearing a difference when it takes 20 minutes to swap over.
Now the shock----------------- I noticed immediately a very serious upgrade change. I called my Son in telling him about the spike change. He said Oh Dad, your imagination!, I asked him just to sit down and listen. He then said I must say that sounds very good.
Now how can I explain the difference to you all ------ for those who have tweaked --- it was like changing good copper interconnects for good silver ones----- yes that good. The Bass was tight, deeper, controlled --- the treble appeared cleaner and sweeter--- the sound stage back to front was extended. I have tried to work out what was making the change and it was silent space around the instruments giving the appearance of separation between them. A mush layer had been removed I didn't know I had.
Now I thought this can't be the spikes. It must be coincidence, perhaps uncoupling the speakers and re-adjusting them had released magnetic build-up in the system. ( I'm no fool). Tools back out, put it all back.
No doubt about it the sound I was used to was back - my normal good quality sound. The great improvement (from magnetic field release) was lost. I had to do it------- tools out again. New spikes back in. Guess what it is real. They work. How? But they really do, they are just spikes aren't they?
Well make what you like of this. I am impressed and looking to buy these. They are called R.M.S. --- I believe Audiolinks may be able to help get them. ( Tel 01724 870432 ).N K Sharpe
