The current issue (#4/2000) of Audio Electronics (nee The Audio Amateur) has an article by Walter Jung on a substantially modified
version of his high-performance voltage regulator design. It incorporates bootstrapping for improved input ripple rejection, an
alternate selection of opamps (AD817 or AD825) to replace the AD797
for improved RF noise immunity, and some changes to cure rare
occurances of false startup.I am using the original regulator design on my Hafler SE100 preamp, with AD797 opamps directly off the unregulated power supply with no problems observed in the two years I have been using this modification.
This is probably as high-performance a (series-pass) voltage regulator as you can find and I recommend it for any projects needing
up to +/- 20 VDC at a few hundred milliamps. The original set of articles covering four issues plus the current issue detailing the modifications makes for heavy reading and is daunting for the beginning DIYer. But it does cover both the circuit design and the
actual implementation into working equipment in considerable detail
and is well worth the lengthy reading.
