Maybe just a mod (but indepth one) afterall?

I'm just curious why you think it would takes years? I think maybe I gave the impression of too deep of a "from scratch" than what I had intended. One thing, the players you mentioned were a bit too expensive for me I think. I'll have to look at some prices, but I doubt I could afford them. A simple marantz 67se with the phillips cdm12 would suffice I'd think. What about the Marantz CDM 9? There's a used rotel RDD 980 for sale relatively cheap. From there I could more or less rip out most components and go from there. Maybe I'm wrong in saying I want to build my own transport. Maybe it is just a modification, but one going far beyond simply replacing the caps. The way I wanted it to go was to learn the role and implications of each component and stage of a cd player (trans + DAC) and from there take the project one step at a time, building each component from project write ups...maybe creating an amalgum of the different ideas to create an original and hopefully superior component. I'm not looking to go in as much depth as making my own transformer and maybe if a component would just be ridiculously hard to manufacture on my own, just a very good understanding of what it does so I can pick one of my own preference to put in the unit would suffice. I don't want to toot my own horn, but I am a very fast learner, at the top of my engineering school so concepts and necessary background research I'll have to pick up I have no problems with. Please keep the help coming!!!! thanks!

Andy
