Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |
|
As promised in my previous post, I have completed constructing three more of these tweak devices. Each one was made with:-1 pack of Radio Shack 273-104 Ferrite Chokes ($7.99)
-about 2 feet of generic 16 GA lamp cord (brown, if anyone cares) (.16 per foot)
-Eagle Electric BP1912B 2-wire plug ($1.25)I plugged in four of these devices in my apartment, one on each major circuit leg--one in each of the two bedrooms, one in the kitchen, and one in the living room where my system is located. This review is after having them in place for about two hours.
I've noticed that the biggest change is a decrease in ambient noise to to various electrical devices. My roomate returned home to discover that his computer was also tremendously silenced, like mine. That can be considered a totally blind test--I didn't tell him that I had installed these devices in the apartment, and he didn't see any of them. Both our computers are quieter. So is my ceiling fan, and various other appliances. The A/C seems to NOT be affected, but the refrigerator is certainly quieter. I have no comment on our water heater, becasue it never has made any noise. I'm guessing that the A/C is 240 volt, and is therefore not affected since these devices are all on 110 lines.
As for further improvement on my stereo system, it was very minor. I noticed a slight improvement in quality due to the noise floor dropping a little, and an improvement in the treble details. An improvement, certainly. A *major* one, not really.
All in all, I'd say it was WELL worth the money involved. The units I assembled cost about $10 each to make, and they WORKED. That's more than I can say for a lot of the tweaks that I've tried.
My recommendation is to give this a try--it doesn't cost much to test it for yourself, and all the parts are easily found.
