Mono Blocks or Two Chassis Stereo Amp ???

216.214.209.162

I have a project on the horizon but wanted some input from those that might have tried something similar in the past. Hopefully, someone ( namely me in this instance ) can learn from your mistakes : )

I have two older stereo power amps that i plan on "gutting". Out of these two stereo amps will come one BEEFY stereo amp of much higher parts quality. In effect, i will be removing one channel of each amp and then "balancing and blueprinting" what remains. This will allow each channel to have it's own individual transformer / power supply section with a dedicated bank of various sized capacitors.

Here are some questions. Keep in mind that the transformers are large iron cores and not toroidals.

Am i better off building a pair of mono-blocks with on-board power supplies or a stereo amp with a seperate box for the power supplies ? Does the benefit of being able to place the amp closer to the speaker outweigh the benefits of removing the majority of "magnetic junk" from the same chassis as the audio circuitry ?

While i could go the "ultimate" route of mono-blocks with external power supplies, that starts getting pretty out of hand in terms of the amount of chassis' needed (4) and the wiring involved. This is not to mention the amount of space that it would also take up.

Any comments / suggestions ? Sean
