FRED meets DVD: Early report

63.224.2.131

I used 600V 8A HEXFREDs from IR, replacing the main diode bridge in a Toshiba 3109 DVD player. This is used as a transport feeding a Link DAC via a Monarchy DIP. Oh yeah, I use it as a DVD player, too :) Installing the FREDs was much easier than I expected (especially for someone with limited experience such as myself).

I ran the unit all night, so it has about 20 hour on it. Here's how it is going so far:

There is more low level detail through the midrange and highs. Mids and highs seem extremely clean and clear (there was an initial edginess to vocals that has since smoothed out), and the noise floor seems a touch lower. However, I'm noticing a loss of bass which likely contributes to what I'm perceiving as less "fullness" and immediacy to the sound.

As far as picture quality goes, my television and s-video cord aren't the best, but I think there is a bit more range in contrast, more subtle shadings from black to white, and slightly richer color saturation.

While it too early to make any final judgements, I admit to finding these mixed results, and particularly the noticeably attenuated lower frequencies, to be perplexing, esp. since the unit is being used as a transport. I suppose the "cleaner" sound might contribute to less bass bloat, but I don't think that is all that is going on.

If someone has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them (I expected this to be a slam-dunk :)). I'll give it through the weekend, and then if necessary look at trying another approach like the Harris Hyperfasts. If I had to choose right now I'd go back to the stock diodes, but I want to give it enough time to burn in first. Does anyone have a favorite axial lead soft-recovery diode that is worth giving a shot here?
