Do you need a phono stage? Thorsten Loesch's Toccata MkII, based on Arthur Loesch's legendary phono stage design, is probably one of the best designs in existence. His article, with complete schematics, is in the current issue of Valve (downloadable from the Bottlehead website). Thorsten also published a WE417A-based line stage using a Bartolucci output transformer, which he calls the Euridice.
Remember, the best designs have the simplest signal path, and a very strong and STIFF power supply. Eliminate as many capacitors from the signal path (use direct coupling/battery grid bias) as possible. Using a choke plate load or a constant current source will also improve linearity. Finally, the output stage must be STRONG (i.e. high current, low impedence) if you want to drive long cables (or ones with high capacitance).
If you want to keep life simple, buy one of Allen Wright's kits. (www.vacuumstate.com)
