Linkwitz Phoenix upper mid-range notch filter

4.33.67.105

In Seigfried Linkwitz's crossover design for his
Phoenix speaker system, he includes a 2760 Hz
notch filter to "account for differences in the
ear's free-field and diffuse-field response and
for differences between sound pressure in
recording and playback environments". From his
EQ response curves, it looks like the dip is
2-3 octaves wide and about 4 db down at 2800 Hz.

Does anyone have any experiences or comments on
applying this type of EQ? Is it useful for all
speaker types, or only open baffle designs? I
have seen the reponse curves of some commercial
speakers (such as the North Creek Rhythm) that
have a similar dip, but maybe not as deep.

Thanks for your help,
Darrell
