A solid body (the cardboard) will not allow the resistive types to work properly, and the length needed to tune for room modes would be prohibitive. A note on the newsgroups about using these as bass traps prompted me to make my DIY acosutics note available in the first place, so as to avoid a lot of dissappointed DIYers.See my DIY Acoustics treatment note at:
