Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

Hi all,I have a Cambridge CD2 (circa 1988) (16 bit x 16 times oversampling-4 TDA1541's employed, together with some "gating and delay" circuitry.
The player is heavily tweaked-
1. passive IV conversion using 1x22 ohm resistor per channel,no cap to ground
2. DACs being fed from a 300W toroid, with 40 000uF filtering before regs and 4700uF after each +-5 and -15V reg (the regs feed all 4 DACs)
3. SAA7220, SAA7210 and RAM chip being given their own LT1086 +5V regs with 4700uF after each reg.Question 1: I did a similar passive IV tweak on a Rotel 955 and the result was great, with depth, detail and strong bass. In the Cambridge, depsite the OTT powersupply, the bass is not as good. Any ideas as to why or tweaks I might try? Its worth noting that the DACS used are straight TDA1541's, not the A series I found in the Rotel.
Question 2: Thorsten, you mention the TDA1541 as one of the best you've heard, presumably using passive IV. Please inform me of the configurations (powersupply, IV values, decoupling caps, etc) that you employed to optimise the chip.
Question 3:
Should I feed the SAA7220 signals (Clock etc) straight to the 4 DACs,( currently going through some 74HC chips and a few other things-these apparently delay the signal to the DACS sequentially so allowingthe so-called 16x oersampling), thereby operating the 4 DACS in true parallel fashion (and probably reverting to 4x oversampling)? Many thanks
Ryan
