G'Day

Sorry to spoil the party, but that configuration would destroy the phase coherency of the whole thing. The bass panels are symetrically arranged about the mid/treble panel for some subtle and precise reasons. There is equal coupling to the air on each side of the treble panel acoustically. There is physical symmetry, and with the recessing of the treble panel, you achieve a time domain alignment between the treble and bass panels. Aligning essentially horizontally, as you suggest will give about a 15 degree horizontal dispersion (polar plot) for the whole system, instead of the usual 80 degrees horizontal and 15 degrees vertical.

Most of this is BAD news. It is unfortunate that you don't have the space to stack them according to Quad Tech Bulletin 201.

The room they are placed in, if it is of medium size ( say 24ft x 14ft x 8 ft) will also need substantial treatment if they are to perform and be heard at their pretty staggering) best. The reason is that you are attempting to extend what is essentially a strip source by stacking two identical panels. If you just extend the strips you incur no penalties. You gain 6dB in the bass and 3dB everywhere else and a much more civilised impeadance curve (3 to 15 ohms). Imaging is improved also. The speaker is at that point, very large, and can easily "control" an average room, making it "ring" even if you haven't noticed such a problem before. Hence the room treatment.

Remember, a pair of original Quads can drive a volume of 180 cubic metres rather well, and two pairs...

Sorry the news was not better...Good luck.

Gary Jacobson
