Cleaning the laser objective is a big help on these older units. I have a Magnavox FD2040, about the same age, built like a battleship, uses TDA1540 14-bit 4x DACs. Wonderful sound after replacing those awful opamps of yore. Anyway, it had trouble tracking, too, and found cleaning the lens was a tremendous help. I didn't use a cleaner CD, instead using a cotton swab, some camera lens cleaner and some (very) gentle pressure. These old units are a suprise to me, thinking that old stuff would be somehow shoddy. Copper clad boards, separate voltage regulators for each stage. Wish I could upgrade the DACs... alas.
