I have also listen to music in the dark or by candle light and it defenetly let's you hear more, since your less distracted by the "sight".
However, Dimmer switches introduce a lot of trash (noise) into your powerline. I have heared several PA systems and some home systems BUZZING due to dimmer swithes. The more you dimm, the more noise and buzz you can hear.
I defenetly would prefer the candle method.
