Thanks for the detailed response. Very informative.

In part the motivation for my question was to try and understand what someone that did not want to do circuit design could do with an active crossover. It appears clear that to use active crossovers one either has to know a good deal of circuit design or buy something predesigned. Now since, as you note, an active crossover is most effective at line stage this almost demands that the amplification and speakers be purchased together. Given the way most hi-fi equipment is marketed there is very little in the way of pre-designed active crossover-speakers combinations. However, I did audtion some Linn systems that had the capability of providing active crossover amplification (of course you need an all Linn system to do it). I did not hear the active crossover setup, but reveiws over at AR speak glowingly of the improved sound when speakers are switched from passive to active mode.

But as a practical matter for most consumers, passive appears to be the most workable option. Thanks again.
