I generally use the XO frequency needed to protect the tweeter to define the maximum diameter of the woofer. I translate the frequnecy into acoustic wavelength. Knowing that the woofer starts losing dispersion if its diameter exceeds that value, I use that or less.example
the tweeter you want needs a XO > 2.8kHz
the acoustic wavelength is C/f
l = (33080cm/sec)/(2800cyc/sec) = 11.8cm/cyc
\ woofer diameter < 11.8cm
... or a 10cm.
This in turn means via reverse logic that you now can XO upto 3.3kHz & make your tweeter happier
